As the year draws to a close, it’s a final farewell to 2016. It has brought so many things to me. From walking through loneliness, feelings of abandonment, heart issues and feelings of inadequacy you have brought me just as much joy, happiness and gladness through it all. I have thoroughly enjoyed reflecting and looking back on my year through highlights while talking to my friends and here are my favourites.
My momma got remarried. To a wonderful man of God might I add – it is PURE JOY to see her in a marriage where Jesus is the centre and I continually pray that that continues. I was also able to play the violin for her on her special day.
I began dating a wonderful person in my life whose kindness, honesty, openness, understanding and fascinating mind has brought even more happiness, blessing and growth spiritually and mentally that I am very blessed to be bringing in the New Year with him and his church family this evening.
I served at a Christian Youth event called Newday. I was on their prayer team and despite feeling dangerously out in deep waters, Jesus always turned up and I was able to witness so many people give their lives to Jesus and receive healing.
I got on a plane just after an hour of finding out where I was going. Denmark was the destination and I met the most incredible people out there.
I was thrown the most incredible surprise 21st birthday at the beginning of the year. It started out as a meal and then a taxi ride to my house where a huge bunch of my favourite people were.
I went to my first West-end show! It was called Wicked, we stayed in a lovely hotel and I had the most amazing time with my momma! Granted she did almost fall asleep in ‘Defying Gravity’ but I nudged her to life and she remained awake for the rest of the incredible show. (Worth the nudging)
My church’s weekend away called Intensified was in February and I loved every single minute of it. Breakthrough, tears and worship with my church family is always amazing.
I went to one of my church family’s weddings held in our church! It was my first Christian ceremony and it was wonderful to see so many people praising Jesus and to see marriage reflected in such a wonderful couple.
I was able to step into a place of such uncomfortability with worship leading in the CU but I was adamant that I was going to do things that were uncomfortable for me for His name this year, so this was one of them. I was also asked to sing and lead two of the carols at our carol concert. It might not seem like a huge deal but it was, at the time quite nerve-wracking. But Jesus..
I was able to go to the first ever Christian Union ball that our amazing CU committee put together!
In the new academic year I really put myself out there with introducing myself to new people and wanting people to feel welcome and loved. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know people and spending quality time with other people, talking through life and laughing with them as well.
I went on tour with my university orchestra to Czech Republic and Slovakia. It was incredible and we got to play in some amazing venues and visit places that literally took my breath away. We visited caves, a castle, had a huge tour dinner in a place that looked like Hogwarts, visited cities laced with such history I mean, it was amazing. Not only were we able to do that but I met and made friends that made the trip even more enjoyable. (Also I saw the Harlem Globetrotters, well some of their team anyway, there were staying in the same hotel as us AND they’re not kidding when they say they are tall. They.are.tall.)
I went on holiday with my second family and best friends to Dorset!
I arranged to go to Kew Gardens with Tariq for his birthday surprise!
I got my first double spread in our university newspaper!
I created pages and put together a wedding magazine with my fantastic group in one of our units!
I carried on with remaining a small group leader because despite struggling with it last year. I was determined that Jesus had placed me here for a reason and so far, the Lord has taught me so much and I’m seriously so excited to see what the rest of the year has to offer! Stepping out and stepping in!
It was a year of reuniting with old friends!
It was a year of exploring more of London! And meeting wonderful people here!
I said a final goodbye to my granny as my family gathered together. She was such a light <3 Her send-off was amazing and it was laced with her, in every single moment.
I’ve enjoyed getting to know my coursemates more, they make it all that more enjoyable because they are wonderful!
Pulled off our show Ruddygore with the UOP Orchestra!
Learnt a LOT about myself.
All of these amazing things that 2016 brought me have also come with a handful of challenges and brought change and growth. I’ve felt Him just really be able to be there for me and it’s such an incredible thing.
I don’t know what your 2016 looked like, I don’t know your story is, where you’re at with your faith or whether or not you had more low’s than you did high’s this year. However, what I am sure of, is that Jesus is Lord, a King above Kings, name above all names, is constant, through trial and through change. He remains. So hold onto Him because He is nearer than your very own soul.
